Solar PV Transformer Seasonal Maintenance: A Practical Inspection Checklist
A seasonal maintenance routine for PV transformer stations covering moisture control, surge protection, cooling, connections and trend review after extreme weather.
Seasonal changes expose small transformer issues
Solar PV transformer stations experience heat, humidity, dust, storms and rapid load changes across the year. A seasonal inspection helps operators find moisture ingress, cooling restrictions and surge-protection concerns before they become an unplanned outage.
Before the hot or wet season
- Inspect the enclosure, cable entries, roof seals, drainage and ventilation openings for water or dust ingress.
- Check the silica gel breather colour, oil seal level and condition of the connecting pipework on oil-immersed units.
- Review surge arrester inspection records, earth connections and any signs of contamination or tracking.
- Clean accessible radiators, fan guards and air paths; confirm that forced cooling starts at the approved control point.
- Inspect accessible bushings, terminations and cable interfaces for discoloration, cracking, looseness or contamination.
After extreme weather or an abnormal event
Record the event time, transformer load, ambient conditions, alarms and any protection operation. Compare temperature, moisture and cooling trends with the previous stable period. Do not reset or bypass a protection indication until the site procedure and responsible engineer have been followed.
Close the loop with evidence
Keep photographs, measurements, replaced-part references and test results with the asset record. A consistent seasonal record makes it easier to distinguish gradual ageing from a new event and supports faster procurement when a breather, arrester or cooling component needs replacement.
We can help align solar transformer inspection records with suitable MRO parts and a monitoring workflow for remote PV sites.
